Complex sentences are independent clauses (sentences) joined with a dependent clause. They often begin with the words because, when, while, and as. Here are two examples: Because they missed the bus, the boys were late to school- or- The boys were late to school because they missed the bus. Notice that when the dependent clause is at the beginning of the sentence, it requires a comma.
