Example:
Mrs. English gave a speech today.
Mrs. Martinez gave a speech today.
Mrs. English and Mrs. Martinez gave speeches today.
Combining the two subjects from the original sentences creates a compound subject in the new sentence. See? It's just like how we combine two words to create a compound word, like cupcake.
You can also combine the predicates of two sentences.
Example:
My teacher smiled.
She giggled at my joke.
My teacher smiled and giggled at my joke.
Combining the two predicates from the original sentences creates a compound predicate in the new sentence.
