The NTF study guide also went home tonight. It is due tomorrow, so we can review it together and use it to study for Thursday's test. Remember to use the word part meanings to determine the definition of each NTF word.
Students have two parts of homework this evening. The first is a simple editing passage. Remember to underline and examine each sentence in question. Read with a critical eye and look for ways to improve the passage.

"What's a memory?" little Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge asks his parents when they explain that his elderly friend has lost hers. During our reading today, we followed the small boy on his search to discover what a memory truly is. He found answers ("Something from long ago", "Something that makes you laugh", "Something warm", etc.) and then gathered up memories of his own (seashells collected long ago last summer, a feathered puppet with a goofy expression, a warm egg fresh from the hen) to share with his friend. In handling Wilfrid's memories, Miss Nancy was able to find and share her own.
Authors are often inspired by objects and then write detailed stories about them. Use this evening's brainstorming homework to revisit cherished memories brought about by some of your very own treasures. I can't wait to read all about it! Tonight's homework reviewed comparative and superlative adjectives. Remember, we use the -er (comparative) suffix when comparing two people or things and -est (superlative) when comparing three or more. Some adjectives are tricky, especially irregular adjective patterns like good/better/best, bad/worse/worst, little/less/least, much/many/more/most, and far/further/furthest. In the case of adjectives with three or more syllables, we simply add more or the most before the word. Here's an additional link to practice choosing which adjectives to use.http://languagearts.pppst.com/superlative.html
My classes are the best! They're better than all the rest! Have the happiest of times practicing! "Safer Fun in the Sun" is the title of the editing passage assigned for this evening's homework. Your child was asked to complete this passage to the best of their ability, using a strategy that they know works best for them.
We ventured into Roxaboxen today through a wonderful picture book with the same title. Please ask your child all about it. Better yet, go ahead and ask him/her to tell you all about their very own Roxaboxen. It may be a backyard, a closet, or a makeshift fort. After their homework is finished, I hope they'll imagine themselves there. Oh, to be nine years old again! Photos and hearts were due today. If you have not brought yours in yet, tomorrow is your chance.
Word Wall Sentences were assigned as homework tonight. Use each of your word wall words in a super sentence (a sentence that has seven or more words and correct CUPS: capitalization/usage/ punctuation/spelling). Remember to underline the word wall word used and circle all nouns, common and proper. We are setting up our classroom and supplies to inspire us with our wonderful writing. For homework, please bring a 3x5 or 4x6 photo of someone special to you or someplace special to you. This photo (due Wednesday)will be stapled to the classroom bulletin board all year and returned in May.
Students were also asked to decorate construction paper hearts with symbols of people, things, and places that are important to them and glue it into the first page of their journal. Please complete your common noun worksheet this evening and return it tomorrow. Need a refresher about common nouns? Visit http://www.lovetolearnplace.com/Grammar/commonnouns.html Tomorrow we will compose and create our very own postcards. Students were asked to bring a postcard from home if they have one to help us become familiar with the writing format.
Parents can help by brainstorming places visited and memories made over this past summer. What a smooth day! My new students are wonderful, and I can't wait to share the year with them!
We will get to know each other better through the "What's in the Sack?" activity. It's tonight's homework. Each child has been asked to bring 3-5 "artifacts" (items that represent their personalities and interests). All items must fit into the brown paper sach sent home today. Parents: you'll find several papers in your child's Blue Tuesday folder today. Please complete and return for tomorrow. also, please ask your student if they were missing any supplies. We wrote |
